May Day
May day! May Day is my first memory of art. Art of any kind. As a child, Mother shared the story of dancing around a May pole.We looked at a picture in the World Book Encyclopedia. Ribbons attached at the top, and long streamers held at the other end by beautiful dancers.
The ribbons were of may colors and over the years I discovered that the dancers had different stories. Some were single people looking for a mate, some were school children of a village and some were talented dancers of the Kings court, entertaining during May Day Celebrations.(* The Lusty Month of May, song from the production Camelot, says it all) Long ago, ribbon was very rare. The simple extravagance of dancing with ribbons on May Day thrills me!
I love when a single memory touches my heart. The discovery of May Day with my beloved Mother. Falling in love with the celebration but best yet, the ribbons. OH! The ribbons.
May Day around the world has evolved. Evolved into different meanings and celebrations. Each has its own unique story and soul.
I wish you a happy May Day. Celebrate as people did 200 years ago or discover a tradition that defines you. Either way, enjoy, smile.
Love you beyond the ribbons,
Me
