On this day, 1883
a small group of wealthy New Yorkers realized their dream last night  at the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House at Broadway and 34th Street. Frustrated at not being able to get boxes for the opera season at the Academy Of Music, they decided to finance their own opera house.
The nights musical offering was Gounod's FAUST, with Christine Nilsson in the role of Marguerite
Architect Josiah Cleaveland Cady provided luxurious furnishings for the 3600 seat auditorium.
