Why is it, when you are ill, so many memories rush back as you lie very still?
I remember one hot Texas day, when Mother showed up at my door. Politely ringing the bell and holding a small jar with a gingham lid. We had lived in this little Texas cottage less than a year. Lauren was about 4 and Jami was just 1. The year 1985. Mother informed me that my pantry did not have tapioca and every pantry should have tapioca. I had never made tapioca pudding before. I sighed.
Mother said that she had bought a box of tapioca and was sharing it with me, putting my half in an old Smuckers jelly jar. Learn how to make it she said. It is the calm after a storm. ( Meaning that after illness, it is comfort food) I learned how to make it. In fact I now love to make it.
This week, I looked in the pantry for my beloved red gingham, lidded jar and there it was. I almost heard Mothers voice...Learn how to make it she said.
I made my pudding, and Mothers red gingham jar was as comforting as the pudding....
Thanks Mom.
Love you.

Great for memories, Robin. Home made tapioca is the BEST! You made me think.......when I was a child, in bed, ill, my mom would let us have Creme Soda or 7-Up. Woo!! I also remember having a piece of toast with lots of butter, in a dish with scalding hot mild poured over. That was such great comfort. Thanks for reminding me, Robin.

Oh my goodness! I was thinking "who is that?, I've seen this picture before..." I thought this was a picture of a rock star!! What a cool photograph.

Also, I remember when I was sick as a child, 7-up or gingerale, jello, toast, and rice with milk and sugar. Oh, and the smell of Fletchers Castoria! eeewwwwwwww.

Love ya Robin!
